The History of Milele:
Milele began after we visited Kenya in July 2007. While we were there we met many inspiring people whose determination and enthusiasm for life was humbling. We felt the injustice of the fact that so many of the children in this area are born with big plans for their own future which they are unable to realise simply because they can't afford to go to school. Quality education should be accessible to everyone but unfortunately this is very far from the reality. These simple facts motivated the foundation of Milele in September 2008.
The Work of Milele:
Milele is a small sponsorship programme based in the shanty towns north of Mombasa, Kenya. Milele sponsors the education of children who would not otherwise have access to good quality schooling. Milele also provides a food programme and a healthcare programme for these children.
The name Milele, meaning ‘forever’ in Kiswahili represents the dedication and passion of the charity for providing long-standing, sustainable support.
Milele is currently sponsoring four children; Safari, Charo, Kaingu and Emmanuel. The four boys are brothers who live in a childrens home in a shanty town called Mtomondoni. When we met the boys they were living alone following the death of their father in a mud hut in a desperate state of disrepair. None of the children were attending school and the eldest three boys were working at the local quarry making bricks to earn money for food. At this point they were 7, 8 and 9 years old.
Now all four live together in a childrens home where they receive three meals a day, clothing and have a safe environment to go home to. They attend the best school in the area and have all the vaccinations and healthcare assistance they need.
Four children is not enough. We want to grow and take on more and more children each and every year. To send more children to school we need your help.

Milele’s Values:
Milele believes that:
- Education provides opportunities for children, families and communities to build their own lives and futures
- All children should have access to quality education as a basic right
- Sponsorship is an appropriate and secure way of providing access to learning for children who need it most
- Education provided should always be accessible and practical, and should be based at existing schools and institutions in order to support grassroots organisations in the local community to grow and develop
- All children should have access to basic healthcare provision and vaccinations to protect them from disease
- All children should have enough nutritious food to maintain a healthy diet
Milele’s approach is that:
- Communication is a vital aspect of any sponsorship programme. Enough appropriate channels must be put into place to facilitate good links between Milele’s base in England and individuals in Kenya.
- Honesty and transparency from all groups and individuals forms a strong and secure foundation for the future. Milele will always be open in its operations, and will put strategies in place to promote clarity throughout the programme.
- Security and long term sustainability is crucial in the provision of aid. Milele is structured in such a way that every child who is taken onto the programme is backed by funds to secure their full education throughout primary and secondary schooling.
- Being welcoming and approachable to all individuals is essential. Milele is happy to receive help and will support anyone willing to volunteer in finding an avenue appropriate for them to do so.
- Self evaluation and learning are indispensable in the ongoing development of Milele. We are learning all the time and are keen to receive comments which will help us to improve.
